HUMMINGBIRD BANDERS

The list below includes federally authorized Master Hummingbird Banders; some master banders have one or more subpermitees who report to them but are also allowed to band hummingbirds. Not everyone on the list actively bands hummingbirds, and not all authorized hummingbird banders are listed. If you know of additions or corrections, please let us know at WEBMASTER.

NOTE: Contact info for some of these banders has changed, some banders are no longer active, and new banders have received permits. With their cooperation we are attempting to update the list.

If you have an unusual hummingbird that you think should be identified and banded, contact Bill Hilton Jr. at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History via RESEARCH or at (803) 684-5852. Hilton will investigate the bird or relay information to a bander near you. Be sure to include your city/state and phone number in your initial message, and as many details as possible about your vagrant hummingbird sighting. A couple of close-up digital photos also would be useful. (You may also contact a local bander directly at an e-mail address listed below.)

Banders in the EASTERN United States are particularly interested in:

  • ALL hummingbirds coming to feeders between 15 October and 15 March
  • Vagrant hummingbird species other than Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, such as Rufous, Buff-bellied, Calliope, Black-chinned, etc. (These may appear in the East as early as 1 August.)
  • Hummingbirds with artificial color-markings such as green necklaces, dots on foreheads or crowns, etc.
  • Hummingbirds with unusual plumages, including albinos and leucistic birds
  • NOTE: Hummingbirds occur in warmer western states on a regular basis during winter, so unless there's an unusual species there is no need to report winter hummingbirds in states such as Arizona and California. Please DO report winter hummers occurring in more northerly western states and Canada.

More information is available under Vagrant & Winter Hummingbird Banding pages on the Web site for Hilton Pond Center.
