If you know this photo of a nestling was made in mid-February 2003 at Rancho Santa Margarita in Southern California, then you know odds are that this is a almost fully grown Anna's Hummingbird. Thirty minutes after George Brennan snapped the shutter, the nestling hummer made its first flight, leaving behind the inevitable empty nest (below).
