On 30 September 2005, a ghost-like bird--apparently a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird--arrived at the home of Buddy & Becky York in Longwood, Louisiana USA (about 20 miles NW of Shreveport). Buddy's photos--taken through the window--leave little doubt the bird is a true albino with pink legs, pinkish-orange bill, ruby red eyes and a complete absence of melanin pigment. Unlike many autumn albinos that show up and move on within a day or two, this bird remained at the same location for nearly two weeks; it was still present on 12 October. Thanks to Buddy & Becky for sending the photos. (For a Shreveport Times article about this hummer, see "White hummingbird a blessing for couple.") |
