Operation RubyThroat, a project to develop collaboration among students and teachers in North and Central America, was launched in October 1999 by the Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History.

This international crossdisciplinary initiative focuses on the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), a migratory bird that breeds in the United States and Canada and overwinters in Mexico and Central America.

Operation RubyThroat provides a unique chance for businesses, foundations, and individuals to provide financial and in-kind gifts in support of the project's start-up up years. There are also opportunities for on-line internet advertising on the project's website. If you are interested in offering such support or in advertising, please contact principal investigator Bill Hilton Jr. by e-mail or by phone at (803) 684-5852.The project is open to participation by anyone but in Year One (1999-2000) will target teacher-student groups in New York and the Carolinas. In Year Two, it will expand formally to schools in all 38 states in which the Ruby-throated Hummingbird regularly occurs, and in Year Three will involve schools in Canada, Mexico, and the seven countries of central America. Project details are available on the Operation RubyThroat website at www.rubythroat.org.

Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History is a 501(c)(3) non--profit entity; as such, donations to it and to Operation RubyThroat are deductible to the full extent allowed by law. The Center actively seeks opportunities to apply for grants in support of its programs.
