Operation RubyThroat is offered by Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History as a way to excite students and other individuals about science and cross-disciplinary learning, using the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) as the topic. Because the project and this website are administered entirely by volunteers on their own personal time, we ask that participants follow some basic guidelines to keep the project from becoming impossible to administer. All registration fees are used to underwrite the activities of Operation RubyThroat, including banding research on Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.
1. Any interpreter, workshop leader, scout leader, nature center educator, or other informal education specialist is invited to join Operation RubyThroat as a "RubyThroat Leader." A RubyThroat Leader is not affiliated with a public or private school or home-schooled group. RubyThroat Leaders are likely to use Operation RubyThroat as a teaching/learning experience for workshop participants, scout troops, field trips, or similar groups.
2. To become an official RubyThroat Leader, the individual should register by completing the Other Leader Registration Form. The annual registration fee of $20 per RubyThroat Leader will help offset, in part, the cost of conducting Operation RubyThroat and of printing and mailing materials to participants. (Donations in excess of the registration fee are welcome.)
3. Public and private school teachers and teachers/parents of home-schooled students who wish to become official participants in Operation RubyThroat should register through Teacher & Student Group Participation.
4. Individual students (K-16) and individual adults who would like to be official participants in Operation RubyThroat should register on the Individual Student & Adult Participation.
A RubyThroat Observer who officially registers with Operation RubyThroat by completing the form and paying the annual registration fee will get the following benefits for one calendar year:
Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project is now affiliated with The GLOBE Program. If you are a GLOBE-certified educator, or if there is at least one GLOBE-certified teacher at your school or nature center, you are eligible to report hummingbird observations through Operation RubyThroat's new protocols outlined on the GLOBE Web site. See Operation RubyThroat & GLOBE.
