Projects & Activities |
|||
There are literally hundreds of projects and activities that can be conducted using Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) as the focus. Some are simple observational studies that can be mastered by children as young as Kindergarten age, while others require sophisticated reasoning and/or expensive laboratory apparatus. Through Operation RubyThroat, we anticipate that teachers, individual students, parents, and other interested folks will find a project to their liking, implement it, and report back to this website what they have learned about the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (RTHU).
We have divided Operation RubyThroat Projects & Activities into five major groups: Basic Activities, Basic Observations, Research Projects, Cross-disciplinary Activities, and Inter-Grade/ Inter-School Activities.
As teachers and students become participants in Operation RubyThroat during Years One and Two, the program's projects and activities will become more closely aligned with school curricula around the United States. For this to occur, it is essential that teachers contact the principal investigator (Bill Hilton Jr.) with information about how Operation RubyThroat can meet and has met curriculum needs. It is hoped that projects and activities offered through Operation RubyThroat will be used as integral parts of the curriculum rather than as adjunct or enrichment endeavors.
NOTE: Teachers and their student groups, individual students, and others who are registered participants with Operation RubyThroat get priority attention to all requests for information and assistance. To learn about the other benefits of registering, see How to Participate.
